Collision at the Crossroads
An important crossroads, situated at the juncture of 10 major roads, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was a prosperous town of 2,400 residents in 1863. On the morning of July 1, 1863, these roads brought the Union and Confederate armies to battle here. Fighting began west of the town, just beyond the Lutheran Theological Seminary, and spread north.
