Between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago, Bynum Mounds was the site of a thriving village. This is known as the Middle Woodland era. The mounds depicted here in the middle distance still exist and were part of the spiritual life of the village. Life in the village was agricultural with plants such as beans and squash being planted along with meat provided from the surrounding forest. Numerous distinctively decorated pots have been found here. They were created from local clays using the coil technique and then designs were pressed into the wet clay using cords and pieces of fabric.
