This merchant is displaying a symbolic hand, beautifully crafted from sheets of mica stone found in what is now Ohio. As the interested buyer contemplates a decision, the merchant’s servants or slaves set up other valuable items including finely crafted items of copper, greenstone, shells, and mica. Encompassing about 90 acres, Pharr Mounds was a trade center with goods from all over the Southeastern region to as far away as Lake Ontario and shells possibly from the Pacific Northwest. Eight dome-shaped burial mounds were built on the site with several of them being intentionally covered in white quartz or quartzite to give them a glistening, shimmering effect.
